Pit Kiln Building Workshops

This hands-on workshop brought our youth together to explore the art and science of building an underground pit kiln, one of the earliest traditional pottery firing methods.

Through this experience, participants learned how to safely begin constructing, preparing, and understanding a kiln, while also exploring the cultural and environmental importance of working with the earth. As we dug together, our youth connected with the land, observing and learning about the different soil layers beneath us, each one telling its own story.

Beyond building, creativity came to life. Youth crafted their own pinch pots, which will be fired in the very kiln they are helping to create, connecting their hands directly to the full process from start to finish. They also painted bricks that will be placed on the outside of the kiln, leaving their mark on a structure that will continue to serve and inspire future generations.

This workshop was more than just a learning experience. It was a moment of connection, creativity, and cultural knowledge in action.
